Managing angry parents is not like managing a customer service counter. Teachers market knowledge and cognitive skills, and when instruction doesn't fit, angry parents seek resolution. Mental Model of Teaching
The participants will learn how the concept of Mental Models from Psychology research can be applied to instructional planning. Participants will also understand that the development of mental models is a critical foundation for teachers who wish to become experts and have the greatest impact on student learning possible. Participants will practice creating a mental model.

Based on extensive study of existing research combined with his own research and 20 years of experience as a teacher and administrator in public schools, Dr. Hatch presents a fast-paced, engaging and practical message. Here are some comments past participants have made about this presentation:
• Very useful. Clear and concise goals that I can work on!
• Worth every minute! Will be implementing this mental model strategy.
• The training forced me to look at some of my practices and omissions…that was tough to realize that some major improvements are needed; even after lots of years of experience!
• This training was excellent! I am so excited to get started “attacking the gap”!
• Great session. Thank you for your efforts. Time flew by and everyone I have talked to got something out of this time.

Formative Assessment: The Underused Magic Bullet
Research demonstrates that formative assessment can dramatically improve the caliber of student learning but unfortunately it is underused by most classroom teachers. Formative assessment is a planned process in which evidence of students’ status is used to by teachers to adjust their ongoing instructional procedures or by students to adjust their current learning tactics. Because formative assessment is a ubiquitous ‘buzzword’ in education, educational leaders need to take a close look at what it means and how it is different from other kinds of assessment. The focus of this presentation will be on how evidence of student understanding is gathered and used by teachers and students in a formative way to promote learning. Formative assessment strategies will be addressed, and a model for implementing a school-wide program for formative assessment will be presented.

Can't beat them? Join them!
After passing your classroom management class in college, did you notice that what you learned did not totally prepare you to handle a classroom full of students? What do you do when a student simply refuses to work, or worse, what do you do when a student will not comply with a direct command from you as the teacher? Do you frequently get mad at, or even begin to despise, students because of their attitudes or bad behavior? If you are a new teacher and you experience these problems, bring your stories about difficult students to this presentation I will help you find a way to lower your stress level and still make sure that the students in your class are accountable.

This presentation will focus on a discipline strategy that is not taught in classroom management classes. It helps me work with students who like to push the classroom rules to the limit and those students who attempt to show teachers just how powerful and independent they are. I will talk about a list of things I wish I would have known during my first few years of teaching. I will answer such questions as: How do I make students accountable for their conduct without alienating them? How do I avoid power struggles with students? How can I discipline a students without disliking them? This strategies will work for high school and junior high students. It could also be adapted to meet the needs of an elementary classroom.

Research 2 Write
Students have traditionally been media “consumers”. As technology explodes in schools, students are now expected to become “creators” of media. They may be Digital Natives, but online gaming and Internet surfing are not the skills that students need to deal with the overwhelming and often unauthoritative amount of information online. This class will give participants the tools needed to have their students become published authors.

Techniques for Going Beyond the Data to Identify Root Causes
Assessment data can be useful at identifying problems in a school, but the exact cause of the problem will not always be obvious. If the underlying problem is misidentified, then any interventions may fail. In this presentation, we will borrow from the field of public policy and review various techniques policy makers, administrators, and even teachers can use to identify the root causes of problems in schools, including boundary analysis, classification analysis, and assumptional analysis. At the end of presentation, participants will be better equipped to identify problems in their schools in order to make better informed solutions.

CBEAR writing
This presentation will teach the use of a writing strategy specifically for BODY paragraph writing. The strategy is an acronym that allows students to gain a strong understanding of what is needed in a well-developed paragraph. This strategy has spread in our district from middle school to the high school and we have seen great growth in our writing scores. During the presentation, we will learn what CBEAR stands for, use CBEAR with RAFTS to address writing prompts, scaffold the tier 1 instruction of CBEAR to specific grade levels, and use CBEAR outlines for both informational and argumentative writing. Participants will leave with a new strategy to support student writing and handouts to implement as soon as they return home. The session will have lecture to share the strategy, but participants will then use the strategy in the session and collaborate to apply to their specific content and needs. This strategy has been used with 5-11 grade, all contents, ESL as well as Sp Ed and Honors students. Utah student examples will be part of the presentation as well.

How Classroom Teachers Can Deal with Confrontational Parents
Managing angry parents is not like managing a customer service counter. Teachers market knowledge and cognitive skills, and when instruction doesn't fit, angry parents seek resolution. This stress compounds everyday demands of scrutiny and assessments. In this session, participants will practice skills that deflect parents who bully, criticize, demand, and threaten. Real-life scenarios will be investigated, and role-playing will model how teachers can cater to all customers while delivering rigorous content that is priceless.

'THE' most crucial curriculum-Character Education
Development of individual character, self-esteem, and personal integrity has a direct impact on the way a person thinks, speaks, and acts. Direct instruction and discussion of what it means AND looks like to be a person of strong character will make a positive impact on a person's success and they way he/she influences the world. South Sevier Middle School has developed a character education program called me2we where students are challenged to shift their thinking from being self-centered and judgmental to being more accepting and tolerant of others. A discussion of what this "crucial curriculum" looks like and the results that come from its implementation will be held to help generate an understanding and interest in development of similar ideas in schools of all levels.

Formative Assessments in All Their Splendor!
Formative assessments are not an “end of unit” test or a “mid-term.” Formative assessments are part of the everyday teaching and learning process, if used properly. They give in-the-moment information about the level of learning for each student as they are being taught; including information to direct instruction right now, tomorrow and next week. Students benefit from formative assessments when they are trained how to glean information, such as where they are in the learning process right now, and what they can do, themselves, to increase their learning. A formative assessment, as Carol Ann Tomlinson has said, “. . . isn’t an end in itself, but the beginning of better instruction.” In this presentation, we will explore various types of formative assessments and data collection methods; and, learn how to weave them within every lesson, creating better instruction and student learning outcomes.

Beat the Clock! Teach More in Less Time
Involved in this presentation is a set of classroom strategies and beliefs that will give the teacher more time to teach. The information presented is research based and is used nationwide. It gives teachers the tools to manage their classroom in a way that even the most difficult student can learn. What teachers will take from this is a belief system and a set of strategies which are the foundation of the nationally acclaimed Time to Teach seminars. Punishment does not work! It is a temporary fix for a set of behaviors. This will impact your teaching.

More Than Just Highlighting: Using Annotated Reading to Connect All Readers to Text
Explore Annotated Reading as a purposeful reading strategy that connects with the strategic instruction anchor of the five Anchors of Differentiation. This session links all students (students with needs, gifted and typically performing students) in a tier 1 setting with a purposeful, teacher guided strategy to increase comprehension of narrative and information text across grade levels. Learn appropriate annotation strategies for students ranging from kinder to 12th grade that will support reading comprehension of complex texts. View videos of your Utah colleagues using annotation skills in their classrooms and align your classroom needs to the core standards. View resources connected with instructing annotated reading that you can take to your classroom today. Objectives for this session include: 1. Participants will demonstrate conceptual knowledge of annotated reading as a strategic instruction differentiation strategy to benefit all learners in a tier 1 setting through examples, research, demonstration and video models. 2. Participants will explore and categorize specific annotated reading actions for narrative and informational text across elementary and secondary grade levels. 3. Participants will choose one standard from their grade UCS ELA standards that can be addressed through annotated reading and choose 2-3 narrative or information annotated strategies to instruct with a classroom of students.

Irlen Syndrome
This presentation will give an overview of the symptoms of Irlen Syndrome. Individuals with Irlen Syndrome may seem brighter than their ability to perform. They often have highly developed auditory skills and can answer questions orally but do poorly on weekly written tests and run out of time. They spend an extraordinary amount of time on homework and can often appear fidgety or distracted. This is not a visual problem as most of these students have 20/20 vision or can be corrected to 20/20 vision with glasses, but still do not perform up to expectations. They may report to teaching staff or parents that words move or disappear on the page, they may have difficulty copying text from the board to paper. It may also affect math, lining up numbers, miss-reading signs and symbols, making careless mistakes and reading music. Many are miss-diagnosed as having dyslexia or ADHD.

At this presentation, you will be given tools to better identify students with Irlen Syndrome, identify physical cues and simple accommodations that can be easily used in the class or workplace environment.

During the 2015-16 school year, Snow will broadcast 85 sections of 40 unique courses available to all Utah high schools which can receive IVC, or EdNet, classes. This presentation will focus on what any Utah high school can do if it would like to participate in Snow’s broadcast classes. We will discuss:

particulars of the legislation and program,
what classes are available in fall 2015 and spring 2016,
what equipment is required at the high school,
how schools can decide which classes to offer its students scheduling classes with a block schedule,
strategic planning for students’ educational goals,
IVC science classes available with labs,
Courses available only for students completing a General Education Certificate of Completion or an Associate’s Degree,
what schools need to do to participate in classes,
how students apply to Snow College for concurrent enrollment,
concurrent enrollment academic advising,
IVC best practices

Schools which already participate in Snow’s IVC program will learn ways to improve their offerings to students and make the best use of their IVC classrooms and resources.

Your Most Powerful Teacher
School administrators are under immense pressure to show improvement in student achievement. The public, the legislature, accreditation boards, and colleges are all demanding higher student performance. The key to achieving these goals is to raise reading levels and improve critical thinking skills. In this session, we will show you the benefits of adding a certified teacher librarian to your team. Twenty-five separate state studies demonstrate that teacher librarians raise student achievement. We will show you how a teacher librarian can improve reading scores, writing skills, critical thinking, college readiness, and more, across all subject areas in your school. The research indicates this positive impact is even more pronounced among at-risk students. Come learn how to harness the potential of “Your Most Powerful Teacher.”
